Promoting Student-centered Math Instruction with the CRR

Dr. Rodrigo Gutiérrez

The CRR offers a range of professional learning opportunities to address the teaching and learning of mathematics. Teacher experiences are designed to create flexibility and relevance in the classroom–adjusting to the needs of learners with powerful visual and physical experiences and with community and communication. Student-centered approaches, including Experiences before Explanation, are an expectation rather than a novelty for math teachers, including elementary, secondary, substitute, and special educators.

Rodrigo Gutiérrez taught middle and high school mathematics before becoming a teacher educator. His professional interests lie at the intersection of teacher development, mathematics education, and teaching for social justice, paying particular attention to Latinx and emergent bilinguals. Rodrigo is currently Co-Director of the Center for Recruitment and Retention of Mathematics Teachers (CRR) at the University of Arizona, offering high-quality professional development to ALL Arizona teachers.
