Creating Equitable Classrooms: Centering Black and Brown Girls

This presentation dives into the principles and practices required to create a genuinely equitable classroom. The workshop examines the historical and current relationship Black and Brown girls have to the carceral system, as well as the role that Black and Brown girls play in advancing learning and community. So often we focus on the resources that Black and Brown boys need, and though extremely important, we cannot do so at the expense of our young women. The workshop will not only explore why centering Black and Brown girls creates a more equitable environment for all in the classroom but also will provide educators with concrete practices and strategies to employ in establishing their classroom culture.
